Tape – Surface Sampling Protocols
Transparent tape or
Bio-Tape slide samples provide a quick and easy method
to identify the presence of fungal genera.
A small piece
of transparent tape is touched or pressed to a surface area which the laboratory will affixed to a microscope slide. The
slide is examined at 630x magnification and the fungal spores
and hyphal fragments are identified. A few guidelines when tape sampling:
One to 2 inches of crystal clear transparent tape should be used and fixed to a slide.
Tape should not be wrinkled, overlapped or torn.
Please use Bio-Tape slides if available. If Bio-Tapes are not available, use Crystal Clear tape only. Do not use frosted tape or packing tape. The laboratory will not be able to analyze any sample collected on frosted tape.
Avoid collecting excessive debris and/or fungi. Samples that are too thick are difficult to observe scopically and therefore may be impossible to analyze.
Avoid using extremely large pieces of tape. A 1 x 1 inch or 1 x 2 inch piece is adequate.
Do not wrap the tape completely around the microscope slide.
Package tape samples with care. The laboratory cannot analyze cracked or shattered tape samples.
