Tips for Sending Spore TrapSamples to the Laboratory
Number the cassettes accordingly and avoid writing over the lot number and expiration date labeled on the cassette. The laboratory records both the lot number and expiration dates of all cassettes received for analysis.
Avoid taping the cassettes - this is not necessary as long as the cassettes are not opened. Make sure to use the labels on the cassettes to reseal the intake and outtake ports.
Avoid freezing and extreme heat exposure prior to and after sampling - these temperature extremes may alter the substance used to impact the spores and make the slide difficult, if not impossible to read.
Package samples with care - make sure that there is adequate padding included in the box to protect the spore traps from aggressive handling during shipment. Failure to properly protect the spore trap cassettes may results in damage in route to the laboratory.
Schedule the delivery of spore traps to the lab in a timely fashion. Ideally, spore trap cassettes should be received in the laboratory within 24 hours after sampling.
Remember to list the sample volume on the Chain of Custody/Laboratory Test Request Form. For example, 2 minutes at 15 liters per minute (30L/min). Also, remember not to list a sample volume for a blank sample that you had never actually sample. Your results are reported according to the sample volume that was used.
